The 2012 Annual Catholic Appeal received a solid kick-start on Saturday, February 11th when the Bishop Salpointe Council #4584 of the Knights of Columbus provided a complimentary dinner for St. Andrew's parishioners. Bishop Kicanas was the guest speaker. By the end of the evening attendees had contributed or pledged contributions to the annual appeal equal to a third of the total annual goal. Thank you to all the Knights and their spouses, the parish youth group and the ladies of the parish who set-up the hall, decorated the tables, served the meal, washed dishes, cleaned-up after the event and re-set the hall for bingo. It was a lot of hard work but well worth the efort.
Thanks to all those Knights who helped set-up, cook, serve, staff the Pro-Life booth or clean-up after the First Annual Sierra Vista Ministry Fair. Roughly 500 people were served a complimentary meal (a hot dog or hamburger, chips, a candy bar and soft drink) from the food trailer that Council #4584 has donated to the St. Vincent dePaul food bank. Over 30 ministries/charitable organizations had displays in the Apache Middle School gym where they greeted and provided information about their ministries to fair visitors.

Council #4584 joined forces with Our Lady of the Mountains Council #10799 in putting on the annual Free-Throw Competition. Our participation is a fitting tribute to our deceased brother, Frank Benson, who was the driving force behind the local free-throw competition. The competition was held at the Buena gym on Sunday, 22 January 2012. The winners are shown in the photo with the Grand Knights from both Councils. The winners names will be added to this article when they are available.

Twenty-two Scouts, parents and Knights participated in the Fall cemetery clean-up project on Saturday, October 29, 2011. The rainy season brought enough moisture to produce a healthy crop of weeds and grass but with a lawn tractor, weed wackers, rakes and a motivated crew the work proceeded at a rapid pace and the cemetery was soon looking well-maintained.
A First Degree Exemplification was held on Tuesday evening, October 25, 2011 and Knights Lauro Teran and Phillip Ulmen became the latest members of the Knights of Columbus and Council 4584. Brother Teran is currently in training for the Deaconate. Brother Ulmen along with Brother Doug Powers who received the First Degree last month, are the youngest new members of the Council. We worked with Phillip not too many months ago on his Eagle Scout project. We welcome these new Knights to our order.
Council 4584 of the Knights of Columbus has participated in Arizona's Adopt-A-Highway program since its inception in 1991. On this 20th anniversary of the first highway cleanup, twenty Knights and family members kicked off the day with coffee and donuts and then spent part of a beautiful Arizona Saturday morning picking up litter along their assigned stretch of Highway 90. A good time was had by all!!!!
The Saint Vincent de Paul Society held its annual "Walk for the Poor" on a beautiful Saturday morning, September 24, 2001. Nearly 100 people, including some brother Knights, gathered at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic church where they dropped off donated food items and listened to brief comments from the manager of the local St. Vincent de Paul store and Sierra Vista Mayor Rick Mueller who read a proclamation by the City dedicating the day as "March for the Poor Day". Most of the attendees also joined in for the walk from the church to the store.
Led by Pro-Life Chairman Roger Wysong, Brother Knights (PGK Leo and his wife Mary are on duty in the photos to the left) staffed the Pro-Life booth at the 2011 Cochise County Fair from September 22 through the 25th. The Pro-Life booth at the County Fair is an annual project sponsored by Council 4584.
The new officers of Councils 4584 and 10799 were officially installed at a joint ceremony at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 156 Kayetan in Sierra Vista, Arizona on Saturday evening September 17, 2001. The ceremony was impressive and the meal was fantastic.
Parishioners showed up in force to clean-up the parish grounds on Saturday, September 10, 2011. As usual Brother Knights were a significant part of the workforce. Dozens of Mesquite trees and shrubs were trimmed, weeds were pulled and, in general, the grounds were manicured. Some of the thorns on those mesquites were three inches long and serious blood evidence was left at the scene. It's fair to call it a crime scene, particularly after one looks at the way the guys in this photo butchered those poor shrubs!!! :-)
The Annual St. Andrew the Apostle Parish Picnic was held on September 18, 2011 from noon until 4 PM. It was a lot of fun and the Knights were well-represented, in the person of WDGK Larry Powers, who did a great job flipping burgers and hot dogs. Thanks for cooking Larry and thank you to all the Knights who helped with the set-up before and the clean-up after the picnic.
June 11, 2011 was a busy work day for the Knights of Council 4584. After cleaning up a mile of Highway 90 the brothers moved on to projects at Fry Cemetery and the playground at the Parish Center. A number of Knights worked the remainder of the day leveling the site, installing containment and weed-block fabric and spreading "fall-zone" cushioning material. Since that preparation project play equipment has been installed and the day-care facillity is in operation.
Nearly 50 Knights, family and friends attended the 7th annual Knights of Columbus Day at Chase Field on August 27, 2011. The Diamond Backs won and that made everyone but one (you know who he is) Padres fan happy. Thirty-one people took the bus and had fun visiting with each other on the 3-hour trip. The temperature was 118 degrees in Phoenix when we arrived and still 108 when we left. The air-conditioned bus and stadium were much appreciated.
Fry Pioneer Cemetery in Sierra Vista, Arizona is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Knights from Council 4584 and Scouts from Troop 464 maintain the cemetery twice each year and a number of Knights and Scouts were among the 60 people who attended the dedication ceremony held at the Cemetery on Friday, July 29, 2011. At the Celebration our Council's Chaplain Fr. Greg Adolf commended the efforts of those who have worked so diligently to preserve the site and honor the resting place of the pioneers of Sierra Vista.
Several months ago, St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church decided to enroll in the Stephen Series system of lay caring ministry. This program was developed by Stephen Ministries, a nonprofit religious and educational organization based in St. Louis, MO. St. Andrew's will be preparing for this ministry in the months to come. Jody Jenkins and Connie Sayers have already attended a week-long Leadership Training Course in St. Louis in May of this year. There, they received instruction and materials necessary to implement and sustain this program of lay caring ministry.

Seven Knights from our council installed 11 new evaporative coolers at the Loretto School. The 20-year-old coolers had mold and all kinds of nasty stuff in them and had to be replaced. Bryant Sayers, Brian Ulmen, Ruben Miranda, Kip and Suzie Rick, Luke Roberts, Jim Ramey, Leo O'Brien and one other gentleman did a great job and Sister Aloysius, the principal at the school was overjoyed. There was a 12th cooler on the third floor that they couldn't reach or they would have replaced that one too.
Our Fifth Annual Charity Golf Tournament was held on Sunday, October 9, 2011. It was a beautiful day at the Turquoise Valley Golf Course in Naco, AZ. The tournament kicked of at 9 A.M. with a Shotgun Start. One 2-person and fifteen 4-Person teams participated. This annual event is held to raise funds to help support Council 4584's community, church and youth programs. Pictured with Miss Sierra Vista is the winning team.
